What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is a technique in which the feet or hands are massaged or manipulated. Studies have shown that this increases wellness and healing in other parts of the body.

Since the time of ancient Chinese and Egyptian civilizations, foot therapy as a form of healing has been a widespread practice. Ancient texts in many cultures throughout human history make various references to it. It came to America in the 20th century after Dr William Fitzgerald and physiotherapist Eunice Ingham rediscovered and refined the techniques.

What is Reflexology Doing Today?

Paradise_Foot_Spa_Foot_And_Body_Massages_in_Jupiter_FL_4Modern reflexology is based on the various studies that show that the foot has ‘reflex’ points that correspond to all the organs, glands, and systems of the body. Any health problem in the body can usually be detected in the related area of the foot. The left foot generally corresponds to any organs, glands, etc on the left side of the body, while the right foot corresponds to organs and glands on the right side.

Practitioners believe that by massaging or stimulating the reflexes on hands and feet using specific techniques there will be a direct effect on the relating organ. For the most part, it is believed that the more tenderness felt by a patient on the area being massaged, the more likely it is that there will be a possible imbalance in the corresponding area of the body.

Corns, calluses, and other marks or problems on the feet or hands may be interpreted by a reflexologist to mean there is a possible health imbalance in the corresponding area of the body.

Reflexology practitioners may be able to effectively treat a wide range of disorders including:

  • Circulation disorders
  • Impaired immunity
  • Digestive issues
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Reproductive problems
  • Sleep problems
  • Lack of energy
  • Edema (swelling)
  • Stress and emotional problems.
